This is your life, fight for it.
The book is a wonderful read so far. I am reading the truths that I think I need to hear from the variety of topics that are covered in 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life by Humble the Poet. Each of them is short, sweet, and impactful. Often, this genre does not enlighten us to profound truths that were the missing puzzle pieces preventing our lives from being more awesome They are really just some ideas that we know but forget and we need to be reminded of them again. Truth #72 Fight! was too good not to share:
Let’s try not to be disheartened if the things we want in life are taking a little time to come along. Make sure you do your best to seek and reach out for them. The success that we want in life rarely comes easy. We could spend time just coveting it or envying the skills, lifestyles, and achievements of others. But there is a lot more to that.
Laziness is like a bug that slowly eats away at life, leaving less and less behind. I am really fed up and want to be done with it. The lethargy and bad habits it creates are not easy to beat but also not impossible. I would like to believe that, with some sincere time and effort, things can be put back into place and laziness will not have as much control over me.
I get quite disappointed in myself the moment I realize that I have passed hours, or sometimes days or weeks really, without sticking to my goals and making any progress that I can feel good about. My last post was on August 4 so I have drifted from my personal goal of 2 posts a week. It has absolutely been one of the roughest months of my life (with some spill over into September that I am sadly still struggling with). I am hoping to be over these hurdles soon. I decided to be a little optimistic and walk away from these struggles with some reflection and lessons learned. It is easy to come up with motivational talk in my optimistic moments but my challenges, experience, determination, and frustration – the best and worst of me – all come from the worst moments. Once, a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and full of problems. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed as if just when one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled 3 pots with water and placed each one on a high fire. Once the 3 pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. After 20 minutes, he turned off the burners, and put the potatoes and eggs in separate bowls, and poured the coffee in a cup.
Turning to his daughter, he asked, “What do you see?”
“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.
“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.”
She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
“What does this mean?” she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs, and the coffee beans had each faced the same adversity – the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently to the situation. The potatoes went in strong and hard, but in boiling water became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior, until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water itself and created a new liquid.
“Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”
